Sugar Snap Peas - 8 per sq ft? How? Empty Sugar Snap Peas - 8 per sq ft? How?

So I apologize if this is a stupid question but according to my SFG book, sugar snap peas are 8 per sq ft. I get, 1,9 & 16. But how would you organize 8? Should I just go with 9?

I suspect I shouldn't be sweating this so much, but it's annoying me that I cannot work it out!!! Is it a typo? Should it be 9....

I lose the symmetry!!!!

Thanks in advance

Simon

I don't think I've ever done 8 per square for anything. I personally do 4 sugar snaps per square(either they grow really well in my area, or I'm doing something really right for them) and that still seems like too much to me. My sugar snaps seem to grow rampant and well beyond their 'normal' production range/date.

Sorry I couldn't help you with the symmetry, though I guess if you divide up the square into quarters, then halved each quarter, you'd get 8.

You'll want to grow them up a trellis, so mark where the trellis will go. Then you plant 4 seeds on either side of the trellis in a line right near the netting. Not traditional SFG spacing, you want them all as close to the trellis as you can get b/c the peas will grow straight up it

nyrsimon...you're right-it should be 8. To see how go to my website and look at the 7th post. They should be aligned on the back edge of the garden so that they dont have to grow horizontally before they can attach to the trellis....hope that helps..Jim

This is 1 veggie that I follow the seed packet rather than the book. I plant 1 seed each 2 in. on both sides of trellis. They grow very well and even planting heavily, they require no fertilization, for they get their nitrogen from the air.

Ahhhhhhhh!!!!

Of course - trellis - then 4 on either side!!!!!!!

Ok I was planning on trying individual stakes, but looks like I need to rethink that.

Many many thanks - all you guys responded SO quickly and it was really helpful..

I read all the post but my question is with the installed trellis. It is behind the SFG so how do you get two sets unless you let one set run underneath the netting?

I am growing pole beans so i will have the same question this spring?Sugar Snap Peas - 8 per sq ft? How? 601593

I would make 2 very close rows and they will find the trellis. Even with the trellis in the middle, the peas/beans etc will go up whichever side of the trellis that they want, they have a mind of their own!

I put in two rows of peas near the back of the square where they can easily find the trellis and make their climb. I do the same with pole beans but with a little more distance apart in the row, like 2" apart. Beans are so much bigger than my sugar snap peas.

I plant quite thickly with my peas, I make 3 rows within the square. Apparently I put in more than 15 to a square, but the pea plants train up the trellis quite well.

I agree with QB, planting pole beans less thickly, I think I planted12 to a sq. ft.

I like you plan and will plant 12-15 per square as you suggest. But were is your trellis located? Is it in the back as in Mels book? And if so will I be able to start them up my trellis?

Thanks

Floyd Shocked

Floyd here is how I do my pea trellis. I put the trellis support posts on the outside of the box and at the 6" mark of the square. On either side of that I have 3/4" straps screwed into the top of the bed, one on either side of the trellis support post, running across the bed. I then use cotton or sisal twine and make an over and under web, from the strap over the trellis top, down under the other strap, over the trellis top and so forth. Here is a photo. I always have to encourage the peas at the start of their climb, but soon after they take hold of the net, they do quite well on their own.

Will my beans travel up my 7x7 mesh? I noticed you have twine or string hanging down from the top of your trellis.

I am going to plant pole beans on the ends of my SFG and tomatoes in the middle..at leat that is my current plan.

Thanks

For anyone wiht a trellis, How far apart are your horizontal slats? My peas seem to want to hook onto each other before they find the next slat.
I have the trellis anchored into the side of the box, but then I didn't think and centered the two rows of seeds, so they are growing sideways to the edge of the box, then up, but catching each other along the way.

It's all good, as long as there is support for some the others will cling to a neighbor.

Camprn - you said you have 3/4" straps screwed into the top of the bed. Is this a 3/4" strip of wood or strap of some kind. What is that made of. I am getting ready to plant some Chinese Red and Chinese Green noodle beans and have been considering a set up like you use for your peas. I have been considering a wire across the bed or a strip of wood or a horizontal emt pole.

Shocked I had no idea they would do well with 12-15/square! Hmmm...might need to experiment come fall.

I have been sticking w/ the 8/sq so far and plant 3 in front, 2 in middle and 3 in back of square. Once they start reaching up, I weave them through the trellis once or twice and they cling to whatever they are near (trellis, each other, border fence, ect.). I plant my pole beans the same and they will need very little or no help to find the trellis and begin their climb. Both of these are ones to not worry about when it comes to trellising, just give them a good start.

I spend most of my trellis training time wrangling squash, melons and tomatoes.
